James
B. Ellington practices in
the area of general civil litigation with an emphasis in employment
litigation, governmental liability and public employment litigation,
civil rights litigation and media and communications law.
Mr. Ellington has been a
trial attorney since 1988 following a judicial clerkship with the
Honorable Dudley H. Bowen, Jr., United States District Judge for the
Southern District of Georgia. He has tried cases in federal and
state courts in the areas of employment discrimination, liability under the
Fair Labor Standards Act, civil rights, defamation, invasion of privacy,
media access, commercial disputes and products liability. He also
has extensive federal and state appellate experience in these areas and
others. Mr. Ellington was selected for inclusion in the 2007 and
2008 editions of The Best Lawyers
in America.
In addition to his
litigation experience, Mr. Ellington has represented a number of public
and private entities and counseled them in the areas of employment and
personnel matters. He also represents and counsels a number
of media entities in various aspects of communications law.
He is admitted to practice
before the United States Supreme Court, the Sixth, Eighth and Eleventh
Circuit Courts of Appeals, the United States District Courts for the
Southern, Middle and Northern Districts of Georgia and for the Western District of Michigan, the
Georgia Supreme Court and the Georgia Court of Appeals.
Mr. Ellington is a member
of the State Bar of Georgia, the American Bar Association, the Augusta
Bar Association, where he has served as Treasurer and a member of the
Executive Committee, and the Defense Research Institute. He serves
as a member of the State Bar Disciplinary Review Panel, and has
previously served as Chairperson of the Review Panel and as a Special
Master appointed by the Georgia Supreme Court to hear matters of attorney
discipline. He also serves as a member of the State Bar’s
Formal Advisory Opinion Board, where he is Vice Chair.
Mr. Ellington is a member
of the University of Georgia School of Law’s Board of Visitors and
has served as President of the University of Georgia Law School Association Council. He was a participant in Leadership
Georgia and in Leadership Augusta, where he served on the Executive
Board. He is married to the former Michele Jones.
Mr. Ellington earned his
A.B., summa cum laude,
in 1984 from the University
of Georgia and his J.D., magna cum laude, in 1987 from the University of
Georgia School of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif and
was Executive Research Editor of The
Georgia Law Review.
