HULL,
TOWILL, NORMAN,
BARRETT & SALLEY, with its two locations, has a long history in both Augusta, Georgia and Aiken, South Carolina.
The firm was founded in 1916 by William Hale Barrett and James Meriwether
Hull. Mr. Barrett was appointed to the Federal bench in 1922 and
Mr. Hull practiced with the firm until his death in 1975. Judge
Barrett’s grandson, Hale, is the senior partner of the firm today.
The firm has enjoyed a long history of successful law practice and
achievement in Augusta and Aiken.
In 1999, the firm ushered in a new chapter in its history
by combining with the Aiken firm of HENDERSON & SALLEY, which was
established in 1872 by Daniel Sullivan Henderson. Mr. Henderson was
a prominent South Carolina
lawyer and a member of the South Carolina State Senate. He was in
partnership with his half-brother, Edward Palmer Henderson. D.S.
Henderson’s son, Perroneau Finley Henderson, was a partner of the firm
until his death in 1968. Julian B. Salley, Jr. practiced law since
1936, with an interruption during his service in World War II. Mr. Salley was active after the merger
of the two firms, but unfortunately passed away in 2005.
The firm has grown with the Augusta-Aiken communities and
has long been the largest firm in the area. The firm is presently
composed of 30 lawyers. The firm is AV rated (the highest rating
possible) by Martindale-Hubbell with nine of its partners individually
possessing a similar rating. The firm’s attorneys have varied and diverse
backgrounds. Graduates of the law schools of Emory University,
University of Florida, University of Georgia, Georgia State University,
Harvard University, Mercer University, New York University, and
University of South Carolina are members of the firm.
A staff of 39 provides the firm with competent,
professional support. The Augusta office occupies the seventh and eighth
floors of the SunTrust Bank Building in Augusta’s downtown business
district overlooking the Savannah River. The Aiken office is
located directly across the street from the Aiken Judicial Center in
historic downtown Aiken.

HULL, TOWILL, NORMAN, BARRETT & SALLEY is engaged in
a general civil practice and is the area’s only true full-service firm
providing a broad range of legal services with an emphasis on general
litigation, trials and appeals; securities and corporate law; mergers,
acquisitions and public offerings; local government law; health care;
computer and technology law; internet ventures; trademark and copyright
law; taxation; public finance; commercial real estate; employment and
Title VII law; banking law;
insurance law; trusts, estate planning and probate; First Amendment and
media law and environmental matters. Several members serve as mediators
or arbitrators in alternative dispute resolution proceedings. The
firm enjoys a broad client base of major corporations, small businesses,
professional entities, financial and lending institutions, local
governments, public authorities and three health care institutions.
The firm also acts as local counsel for several public utilities, a
railroad and many insurance companies.
PUBLIC & BAR LEADERSHIP
The firm has a long history of public service to the
Augusta and Aiken communities, the States of Georgia and South Carolina
and to the organized bar. Firm members have served on the federal and
state trial courts, as state legislators and city council members, as
members of the state bar governing bodies, as presidents of state and
local bar organizations, as members of the Georgia Board of Bar Examiners
and on numerous bar committees and court advisory committees.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Firm members are very active in a variety of civic and charitable
organizations, educational institutions and church related activities. A
partner in the Augusta office recently served as President of the Greater
Augusta Chamber of Commerce and several members have held governance
positions in Leadership Georgia and Leadership Augusta. Various firm
members have served as president of the leading civic and community
support organizations over the years. Members of the firm also serve on a
number of non-profit boards and contribute their time and talent to these
entities. Many members of the firm have served on the governing boards of
local churches and school organizations.
